food allergies...just allergies... oh to stop the itching

Do you have allergies? anyone you know have them?  Does your DOG have them?

I just had to take my dog to the vet because I thought she had fleas.  She is itching and biting and fidgeting in her kennel at night and most of the day.  No luck, she has allergies.  It is common, I did not know this.
We have to get a new kind of food and start being detectives to figure out what bothers her.  Usually the easiest thing to control is what goes in her mouth, the food.
Until now, I did not pay that much attention to her food until now but the first ingredient in Purina beneful dog food is corn and dogs are allergic to CORN!!
So now we are trying something with Salmon as the first ingredient.  She seems to love it!  I hope it helps with the itching!

Common Symptoms of skin allergies:

Common allergens for dogs are food, inhalant (atopy), and flea bites. Some of the more common symptoms of dog allergies run from the most common, such as
  • excessive dog itching and scratching
  • hot spots
  • bald spots
  • recurring ear infections
  • nasal and eye discharge
  • continuous sneezing
  • odors (gas and stool)
  • constant licking of paws
  • excessive shedding
  • dull coat
Wow so many symptoms, so many things it could be that is bothering her.... oh the ITCHING!

Dog Food Allergies Treatment

The only way to reliably tell if your dog is allergic/intolerant to a food is by using the elimination diet. This is where you provide one new protein source and one new carb source for your dog to eat, and only eat this, for 8 to 12 weeks. There should be no treats or table scraps while on the elimination diet.
Poor Daisy, she will get NO treats.  Although we did not do allot anyway.
We are in the early stages still, but the itching is what has drawn us to the Vet and now to try new food!  I hope we can help each other out soon!
